Burton graduated from Woodstock High School in 1952. He played basketball and baseball in high school. His senior year baseball team won the Western Maine Championship!
After high school, he had a dairy farm with his dad until 1954. They delivered milk door to door throughout the area.
Burton served in the Army, in Friedberg, Germany, Tank Company Eighth Infantry Regiment, from 1954-1956. Driving Army tanks in Germany for one-and-a-half years prepared him for driving school bus back home later in life.
After returning from Germany, Burton once again ran the dairy farm with his dad until 1968. He also worked for the town of Woodstock as a snowplow driver for 13 years. He drove a school bus for SAD #44 for 19 years. He ran Hathaway and Son with his dad, building many homes together on Mt. Abram, among other places.
Burton married his first wife, Ruby A. Palmer, in 1956. They raised a son, Victor, and daughter, Tania.
He was a member of Franklin Grange #124 for 70 years. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1992.
Burton enjoyed bird watching – he observed many right out his picture window. He also took pleasure in seeing wildlife play in his yard as well as watching and keeping tabs on the neighbors’ farm animals.
Burton had many friends, but would like to mention his best friends: Army buddy, Victor Currence and his wife, Janice, from Ohio; Brian and Suzanne Dunham of Greenwood; Greg and Lindsay Luetje of Bryant Pond, who purchased Burton’s childhood home where his parents lived throughout their lives.
Survivors include son Victor, of Bryant Pond, and daughter Tania, of Yarmouth. Nieces: Deborah Millett, Elaine “Magee” Newell and Miguel Gonzalez, Delia and Jerry Gardner, Karen and Jay Harper. Nephews: Rey and Margaret Jordan, Reverend Vance Jordan, Carleton and Rita Estes, Doug and Janet Jordan. Stepchildren: Matthew York and Penny Gibson. His family would like to thank the Hospice team at Andwell for the expert and compassionate care that Burton received in the last year of his life. Special mention goes to his nurses, Allie, Katie, and Megan.
A graveside service at the Day Cemetery in Woodstock will be held in the spring.
