Auburn, ME: Glenn D. Hinckley (77); July 2, 1947-December 31, 2024.
Born July 2, 1947, on his Uncle Roger Sprague and Grandfather Emery Sprague’s birthdays, to
Donald and Barbara (Sprague) Hinckley. He grew up in West Paris, ME, Worcester, MA and
Pittsfield, ME, where he graduated from MCI in 1965. Glenn married Cynthia (Jones) in 1969,
moved to West Sumner in 1972, where they raised four daughters: Jennifer, Sarah, Hannah,
and Emily (the “Hinckley girls”) until their separation in 1995.
Glenn pursued a variety of jobs, including a rubbish route, plowing and ran a body shop and
auto repair garage at home, after stints at area VW dealerships, Bessey’s and Jewell’s in South
Paris, and even a time at Ellis Boats in Southwest Harbor. Glenn served the community of
Sumner in a number of capacities via the Select Board, School Board, Recreation Committee
and Planning Board. He enjoyed a good road trip; whether it be to Texas, Colorado or New
Mexico, he would jump to go in either a vehicle or on his motorcycle. He was known to go for a
ride and show up unannounced, looking for a meal, a sweet treat or a cup of coffee. His favorite
was to go for an ice cream; he had his favorite stands he would gravitate towards in his travel
radius.
Glenn would reminisce at times about playing baseball in West Paris as a kid. He really enjoyed
being a spectator when his grandchildren played sports– soccer, baseball and softball–and
watching them perform in the arts. Glenn thoroughly enjoyed music, playing the drums in a
couple of bands and then having various instruments in the house to play for himself and his
girls. For a time, he took voice lessons from his mother (a trained opera singer), but never sang
for others to enjoy.
Glenn was a big animal lover–dogs, goats, pigs. He always had a dog around to give him
connection and comfort, but was closest to his wolfdog, Maggie.
One of his greatest adventures was closing part of the garage to open “Beeps Bakery.” Glenn
became known, as noted in both The Boston Globe and Yankee Magazine as “Best out of the
way Donuts”. They were spectacular and many still remember them, as well as his bread and
whoopie pies. He would make donuts for bake sales, and he and Linda made numerous
whoopie pies to be sold at the Dover-Foxcroft Whoopie Pie Festival.
Glenn was loved by his partner, Linda Smith, for the past twenty years. Together, they offered
spiritual classes, healing and retreats under “Two Spirits Healing.” Glenn was known in their
healing circle as “Gentle Wolf” and grew to have many connections with a variety of people. As
he progressed into the grasp of Parkinson’s Disease, Linda cared for and advocated tirelessly
for Glenn.
Glenn leaves behind a sister, Marsha Donahue (Wayne Curlew), Belfast; 4 daughters: Jennifer
(James) Waterman, Sabattus; Sarah Hinckley (David McFarlane), Bar Harbor; Hannah (Ryan)
Flannery, Readfield; Emily (Shane) Ellis, Seal Cove; 12 grandchildren: Charlotte, Sadie and
